Prepping Your Heating System for the Fall/Winter Months

It is very important to make sure your HVAC or furnace receives maintenance once every year, and the best time to do that is as winter approaches. Doing this can ensure it does not break down when you need it, plunging you into freezing temperatures. So, how do you go about prepping your heating for this time of year?

Below you will find several steps you can take to make sure you perform HVAC and furnace repair and maintenance without it being too hard. By ticking off each one, you ensure both the safety and security of your home as things get colder.

Schedule an Inspection

One of the simplest steps you could take is to get someone to perform all the work for you. If you contact a professional HVAC contractor, they could do an AC inspection and tell you what might need work. Depending on their expertise, they may also be able to do a furnace inspection, saving you time and money in the long run.

If they come up with any issues, you can then focus on these to help keep your heating in working order. Another option is to enquire as to if the inspector can do the work themselves, again saving you in the long run.

Air Filter Maintenance

The first thing you should do is look for the manufacturer’s instructions to find out where the air filters are. After you find the filters, turn off the AC unit and remove them.

Then, either replace them with new filters or clean them, depending on what the instructions say. If you clean them, use only mild detergent, or invest in a specific air filter cleaner to ensure they remain fresh.

Then, once they are dry, return them to the AC unit and switch it back on to allow clean air to circulate again.

Calibrate the Thermostat

Compare the thermostat’s readings with a different thermometer. Some may be a little off due to minor drift over time, though if you find there is a larger difference you might need to replace or repair it.

When you inspect it, also clean the thermostat to ensure nothing interferes with its readings. Then, make sure its settings are where you want them to be.

Clean the Vents and Ducts

Vacuum up any dust and debris from inside the vents and ducts in your home. This will allow air to flow around the whole area and prevent mold from forming on duct condensation.

Wrap Up Pipes

Before it gets too cold, you should also insulate the pipes through which hot water flows. These may be in the basement, walls, or crawlspace in your home. If you do not, you may find they freeze, possibly bursting and causing more issues.
